Three key points

  • S&P and Dow futures up ~0.3–0.4%, Nasdaq-100 up ~0.6% ahead of the 8:30am ET September employment report.
  • Economists expect ~85k new jobs.
  • The setup is binary: a soft print likely kills the October hike; a hot one revives it.

  • S&P and Dow futures up ~0.3–0.4%, Nasdaq-100 up ~0.6% ahead of the 8:30am ET September employment report.
  • Economists expect ~85k new jobs. The Fed's October 27–28 decision hangs on this print — traders were pricing 64% odds of a hike just a week ago.
  • The setup is binary: a soft print likely kills the October hike; a hot one revives it. The 10-year yield hit a fresh 24-year high near 5.35% yesterday — bonds are doing the Fed's job for it.
  • Nike is the stock to watch after Thursday's AMC report guided a bigger sales slide than analysts expected.
  • Oil steady with Brent near $102; WTI watching headlines around potential EU diesel stockpile releases.
My take

Bad news was good news this morning — a soft payrolls print was the one thing that could cool October hike fears. For a premium seller, event mornings like this are why we sell after the fear is priced in, not before.

After the close

Bad news is good news: soft payrolls kill the October hike — Nasdaq nears record

Relief rally on the weak payrolls miss — October hike odds collapsing — but bonds won't play along: 10Y climbed back to 5.276%.

Three key points

  • Only 29,000 jobs added in September — a huge miss vs the ~90,000 economists expected, and the third-weakest payrolls print of 2026.
  • All three indexes ended higher: the S&P 500 gained 0.7% to 7,722.72, the Nasdaq jumped 1.2% to 27,190.86 for a near-record close, the Dow added 0.5% to 51,176.96, and small caps rose about 1%.
  • Bonds refused to join the party: the 10-year yield dipped under 5.20% right after the report, then reversed to close at 5.276% — still below midweek's 24-year high of 5.342%.

  • Only 29,000 jobs added in September — a huge miss vs the ~90,000 economists expected, and the third-weakest payrolls print of 2026. Unemployment ticked up to 4.2%, August was revised down to 133,000, and July went negative. October rate-hike odds collapsed to ~21–24%, from 64% just a week ago.
Lingering US-Iran tensions kept a geopolitical bid in long bonds.
  • A tale of two trades: chip stocks roared — the semiconductor index hit a 3-month high with Teradyne +8%, Macom +8%, Arm +6%, and AMD and Nvidia touching intraday record highs — while Nike tumbled roughly 6–8% after a revenue miss and a guide for a high-single-digit sales decline this fiscal year. Synaptics jumped 13% on a revised Onsemi cash deal.
  • Oil slid about 2% on reports the EU could release diesel stockpiles under US pressure over skyrocketing diesel prices tied to the Iran war. Gold eased slightly; Bitcoin held near $85,000.
My take

A soft payrolls print followed by a green day is the market's way of draining option premiums — VIX slid back toward the mid-teens. I don't sell cheap into relief rallies, so I'll sit in cash and wait for a red day to get paid for my risk.
